Wakey wakey

Amidst the pandemic, the comfort of the bed has been hard to resist on the gloomy winter mornings. In collusion with endless scrolling for a quick serotonin fix, the morning routine seems even more unattainable. Our idea is to reduce the risk of interacting with a smartphone first thing in the morning and receiving a toxic dose of Twitter serotonin.

Survey

We initiated this project by conducting interviews to grasp how the pandemic and social distancing have influenced people's sleeping patterns. After compiling the research, we identified 2 different behaviors that the participants have changed.

  • Introducing the Snooze-Free Morning

    ALARM CLOCK

Our idea is to reduce the risk of interacting with a smartphone the first thing in the morning and receiving a toxic dose of Twitter serotonin.

  • Mogura Taiji

    INSPIRATION

"Mogura Taiji” is a popular Japanese arcade and carnival game. The game is won by striking targets that appear from holes in the console with a hammer.

  • Physical Prototyping

    DIMENSIONS

When the concept was chosen, we made simple foam models to estimate scale and proportions, thus ensuring that all components would fit but also to keep the interface intuitive.

Components

Wakey wakey has three major parts: the housing for all the components, the backplate, and the prominent red button used for setting the time.

Final prototype

The final prototype was 3D printed, routed, and lathed. The buttons are connected to the electronic components using glue. The rest of the Wakey Wakey is assembled using screws, bolts, and washers

  • Wakey Wakey fits comfortably in your hands, with large buttons that make gameplay easy to navigate

  • Hopefully, our design can offer users a lifestyle with less time spent snoozing.

WAKEY WAKEY

This conceptual project, is a result from the 'Electronics Limitations and Possibilities,' course. It addresses the evolving relationship between individuals and their electronic devices. Through a survey, revealing heightened smartphone engagement during the pandemic's stay-at-home measures, we conceived 'Wakey Wakey.' This innovative design aims to mitigate the habit of reaching for smartphones upon waking, offering a healthier alternative to the inundation of social media serotonin
